Facts About Seattle Weather
Does Seattle get a lot of rain?
It depends on how you see it. Although it rains often in Seattle, it is most typically a light rain or drizzle. In terms of total rainfall, Seattle ranks #61 among the 100 largest U.S. metros. It gets less rain than New York and Chicago, and about the same as Dallas.
Does it snow in Seattle?
Yes, but not much. From 1991–2020, Seattle averaged 5.1 inches of snow per year. Snow rarely sticks around for long because the temperature typically doesn't stay below freezing. In most years, Seattle will only get a few light dustings of snow. That said, significant snowstorms do occur every few years or so, which can cause major disruptions in a city with so many hills that is unaccustomed to large amounts of snow.
Does Seattle get thunderstorms?
Seattle occasionally does get thunderstorms, but they are rare compared to most other parts of the United States.
